personalised poems

Diana Moore on a postbox Diana takes commissions for personalised poems. One of her commissions involved writing about a yew tree for a society in celebration of the beautiful old yew tree next to their meeting place. Diana set the piece to a well known tune and the song was performed during an open weekend exhibition.

Here are a few lines from 'Yew Tree – The original Methuselahite'

(verses 1, 2 and 5 of 9)

"Hang around the churchyard everyday sir
Taxus Baccata is my common name sir
Oh! Oh! Methuselahite!"

"Ageing and dating me is complicated
Nine hundred years don't underestimate it
Oh! Oh! Methuselahite!..."

"...Edward the third had me stripped of my staves sir
All able bodied men archery slaves sir
Oh! Oh! Methuselahite!..."

Diana writes alternative lyrics to all types of songs from Elvis to Katie Melua.

A teacher reaches a milestone birthday – here is an extract from one of two birthday poems presented to her...

Nine Million Exercise Books (to the tune of Katie Meluah's Nine Million Bicycles)

"There are nine million exercise books to mark
Then there's SATs
Teacher training, PGL
Pressure mounting for the children to do well"

"There are two double lessons next in maths
That's a fact
It's a fact I can't deny
How I curse the realms of algebra and Pi"

"I'm warmed by the fire of keen pupils every day
And teaching is my forte
I won't let this career slip away"

"There are six billion lines in our next play
More or less..."

A fantasy poem for a lady with a penchant for frogs

"There was a young lady called Sue
Who encountered a dashing frog – oooooh!
“Birthday girl” sung the frog
“Hop this way for a snog”
And their love on a lily pad grew"

"But the frog had a rival called Stu
Who raced on his bike to fetch Sue
He reached the lagoon
By the light of the moon
And demanded of froggy “Don't woo!"

"Now froggy was one in a million
His cheeks turned the brightest vermillion
Said he: “Stu you have won
Now I wonder for fun..."
